River Oats; Indian Woodoats

River Oats; Indian Woodoats

Chasmanthium latifolium (River Oats; Indian Woodoats). Gainesville, Florida. 2012. Poaceae (Grass family).

This is a Florida native plant, but I've never encountered it in the wild. This one is in my front yard. River Oats are popular and attractive native landscape plants. I love the way the flat seedheads blow in the wind. They look like they should make a sound, like windchimes. They are green all summer and turn a pretty brown in the fall and winter. I liked the way the sun was shining through the spikelets.
