Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake. San Felasco Hammock State Park, Gainesville, Florida. 2014.
My hiking buddy and I had to change our plans today when we encountered this Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake in the path, about 3/4 through the hike. We were never closer than about 10-15 feet from it, but it rattled at us and hissed and stood its ground. No budging this snake! This is a loop hike and we had to go back the way we'd come, but we were ok with the change of plans because on the way back we heard a Chuck Will's Widow in the woods and saw a Gopher Tortoise and saw numerous lovely spring wildflowers. Pretty exciting nature day!
