"Young Alligator". La Chua Trail, Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park, Alachua County, Florida. 2012.
I came across this young alligator while walking in the Prairie yesterday. Even though it was small (2 feet from nose to tail) they can be kind of testy, so I kept my distance and used the 400mm telephoto. If you look at this photo in the large sizes you can see the little bumps lining the gator's lips and snout. They are sensory organs that allow the gator to feel vibration and movement in the water. They are so sensitive that an alligator can sense one drop of water! They feel the change in surface tension and water pressure and...snap!
