Mediterranean Gecko Foot. Gainesville, Florida. 2014.
I found a dead gecko on my front porch today and took the opportunity to examine and photograph its amazing feet. Geckos are fast and hard to catch, so it's hard to get a chance to do this. They have sticky, hair-like toe pads, called "setae" that allow them to walk on slippery surfaces such as glass. Fatty excretions lubricate the setae and allow the Gecko to remove its foot from a surface. The removable adhesion power of Gecko feet have inspired scientists to try to develop materials that would allow humans to walk or climb up vertical surfaces, like Spider Man!
