Zebra Longwing Butterfly

Heliconians and Fritillaries. Zebra Longwing (Heliconian) Butterfly on Firebush (Hamelia patens). Gainesville, Florida. 2012.

Zebra Longwings are fairly longlived butterflies, lasting several months rather than weeks. This is due to the fact that they consume pollen in addition to nectar. You can see a clump of nectar on the butterfly's proboscis, the long mouthpiece that they use to get the nectar.
