Callicarpa americana (Beautyberry). Gainesville, Florida. 2012. Lamiaceae (Mint family).
You know it's fall when the Beautyberries turn purple! In the spring and summer, these plants have pretty, delicate pink flowers that eventually turn into the most vivid purple berries. People tell me that you can eat them, although I've never tried. Birds love them! I have a friend who makes jelly from the berries. The leaves can be used to make a very effective mosquito repellent. I took this shot in one of the breaks in the rain during Tropical Storm Isaac.
